Climatic variations of several variables - Holocene

The dataset gives the variations of several climatic variables on the 0–10,000 year BP period by increment of 100 year.

The variables are reconstructed using pollen data and an inverse vegetation model (BIOME4). The variables are expressed in term of anomalies according to their present reconstructions (0–100 years BP).

The resolution of 100 years is certainly not reached for all the pollen diagrams used in the reconstruction. It is rather a maximum resolution. In reality, the time-series at that time step are rather smoothed and it should be unrealistic to interpret events with a length inferior to several centuries.

Details are given in Guiot, J., Kaniewski, D., 2015. The Mediterranean Basin and Southern Europe in a warmer world: what can we learn from the past ? Frontiers in Earth Science, 3, 'http://dx.doi.org/10.3389/feart.2015.00028'.

Statement

The R file contains two tables, reco2 [time, gridpoints, variables] of the anomalies reconstructed from 9900 year BP to 0 year BP by steps of 100 years, for 81 regional gridpoints, for 68 variables.

Significance of the variables :

CO2: CO2 concentration in the atmosphere

S2 - not useful

LONG longitude

LATI latitude

ALTI altitude

SOILK1, SOILK2, SOILW1, SOILW2 soilcharacteristics used according to FAO

Tmin minimal daily temperature, °C

Biome = biome type according to BIOME4 typology

NPPtot = total net primary production kg m−2 years−1

MTCO = mean temperature of the coldest month

MTWA = mean temperature of the warmest month

E/PE = ratio actual evapotranspiration over potential evapotranspiration

P-E = annual total precipitation minus actual evapotranspiration, mm

GDD5 = growing degree days above 5°C

TANN = annual mean temperature, °C

PANN = annual total precipitation, mm

T1, T2 … T12 = monthly mean temperature (Jan to Dec), °C

P1, P2, … P12 = monthly total precipitation (Jan to Dec), mm

C1, C2, …, C12 = monthly sunhsine (%)

The last variables are the plant functional types: temperate broadleaved evergreen trees (tbe), temperate summergreen trees (tst), temperate evergreen conifer trees (ctc), boreal evergreen trees (bec), boreal deciduous trees (bs), temperate grass (tg), C4 grass (trg4), woody desert plant type (wd), tundra shrub type (tus), cold herbaceous type (ch), anthropogenic type (hum).
